PPO Dental Plan

Dental insurance is a type of health insurance that provides coverage for basic and preventive dental health care services. The dental services covered by dental insurance depend on the type of plan that the plan holder availed. Most dental insurance plans cover cleanings, crowns, fillings, emergency dental services, and x-rays. Few dental insurance plans cover major dental care services or only provide minimal coverage. Dental insurance providers usually have dental plans called HMO dental plans or Health Management Organization and PPO dental plans or Preferred Provider Organizations.

PPO dental plans are dental insurance plans that give patients the availability of dental health care services at inexpensive costs. PPO dental plans make this possible by letting their plan holders go to a dental health specialist that is a member of the dental insurance provider’s network. Some PPO dental plans also have benefits such as regular dental health care services coverage.

Many dental insurance providers now carry PPO dental plans, and some of them only cover basic dental health care services like annual dental examinations, fillings and oral cleaning. These types of PPO dental plans are very easy on the pocket. Other PPO dental plans provide wider coverage and often include other dental health services and oral surgery which are generally not part of dental health insurance coverage. These comprehensive PPO dental plans can be part of a universal health care plan or an independent dental plan.

PPO dental plans are highly beneficial to plan holders by giving them major discounts or full coverage for dental services availed from dental care specialists who are part of the provider’s network. This is achieved even though the plan holders only have to pay very low premiums.

HMO dental plans and PPO dental plans have various differences in the way they provide assistance and benefits to their clients. For HMO dental plans holders they can only go to dental health care specialists who are part of the provider’s network. PPO dental plans also provide its plan holders a network of dental health care specialists, but they have the option of going to a dentist of their choice, although most of the time they would have to pay for some of the services received or coverage from the plan will only be partial.

PPO dental plans and HMO dental plans also differ in the way they operate when dealing with dental specialists referrals. For HMO dental plans, plan holders must first go to a primary dental provider and get a referral for them to be able to get dental care services from a dental care specialist in the network of the provider. In the case of PPO dental plan holders, they can directly go to dental care specialist without the need for a referral or going to a primary dental care provider.
